For my internship, I was placed at the Allegany County office, but I’ll also be working with the Garrett County office throughout the summer. Since I interned at the Allegany County office two years ago (and one of my mentors has known me since I was in third grade), I was able to jump right in on my very first day. Elizabeth Karides

Hello! My name is Elizabeth Karides and in the upcoming fall I will be a Junior at Louisiana State University! I am majoring in Plant and Soil Systems with a focus in Crop Science and I am interested in eventually working in University Extension as an Agricultural Agent. I am very excited and grateful to be participating in the University of Maryland’s Workforce Development Extension Internship. During my internship I will be working at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center (CMREC) in Clarksville, MD. My mentors I am working with are Dr. Qianwen Lu and Dr. Xuan Wei and I will be assisting them with agricultural research projects related to biochar and salt issues on urban farms. Veda Sanhai

Week 6 was shortened due to the July 4th holiday, but it was still one of the most diverse and productive weeks of my internship so far. Every day provided a new opportunity to learn, explore, and connect with people and projects from across the UMD Extension network. Andrea Franchini organized a special field trip to Red Cedar Farm on Monday, which kicked off the week well. I had the honor of accompanying several others from the Fleet Services building on this visit, where we learned about preserved Native American culture, agricultural practices, and ceremonial traditions. It was an amazing day, highlighted by the opportunity to learn directly from members of the Piscataway Indian Nation. One of the speakers, Sebastian (Sebi) Medina-Taya, generously shared his knowledge of generations-old growing and harvesting techniques.
