My name is Veda Sanhai, and I am currently a senior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My major is in Earth and Environmental Sciences, and I am quite passionate about my field. I plan to do another internship in Switzerland after I graduate with my B.S., and while I do that, I'll research the best place for me to go to graduate school. I do not have a specific career goal in mind yet, but as I complete this internship, and progress with the rest of my degree, I hope to learn more and have a better mindset afterwards. I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to work with University of Maryland Extension this summer, and cannot wait for more projects to come my way.
My internship is based in the Baltimore City office of UDM Extension, though I travel a lot, seeing many places in Baltimore. My mentor for whom I am working with this summer, is Neith Little. During this summer, I will be assisting my mentor in projects such as aquaponic farming, mushroom growing, rainwater harvesting, gardener and fisher interviews, and general agricultural extension. Also, I have the exciting opportunity to work along side Andrea Franchini, where I get to research Native American efforts and all around information. Some of the most thrilling parts of my internship, is one, how meaningful the work is, and two, how far the work spans and the new places and people I get to visit and meet.
During my first week I got to know a lot of the people at my office, and learn more about what I would be doing this summer. On the 29th of May, I visited the Clarksville CMREC facility, where my fellow interns (Elizabeth Karides and Mike Ribblett) and I helped sterilize mushrooms for the mushroom expo we held at the same location on June 2nd. We did this under the supervision of our mentors, Dr. Lu, and Neith Little. I also had the chance to visit an eye catching hydroponic system that same day on the 29th, located in the middle of Reginald F. Lewis High School. The whole system was set up and managed by Clayton Williams, who works for a company called Grow Home.
On the last day of my first week, I traveled to a farm in downtown Baltimore, to collect soil samples of the entire farm, to be later studied and organized by others. In my first week, I met some amazing people who I look forward to working with all summer, such as my mentor and fellow interns, and I cannot wait to help UMD Extension more by getting to work.
