The third week of my internship was filled with diverse and meaningful experiences, that expanded my understanding of agriculture, community outreach, and research engagement.
On Monday, I had the opportunity to visit the Plantation Park Heights Urban Farm in Baltimore. Alongside my fellow intern, Elizabeth Karides, and under the guidance of Ph.D. student Emily Woerner, we participated in soil and produce gathering. It was a hands-on and community-driven experience, that highlighted the role of urban agriculture in promoting food security and sustainability.
Tuesday was spent at the Baltimore County Extension Office, where I attended the AgFs Summer In-Service Meeting. I engaged in action team breakout sessions, and gained insight into the collaborative efforts extension professionals undertake to support agricultural development and outreach in the region.
Wednesday was an especially impactful day, as I joined the MACAA Annual Summer Meeting/Tour. I had the chance to visit several agricultural operations, including Old Line Custom Meat Company, Richardson Farm, Roseda Farm, Willow Oaks Farm, Clear Meadow Farm, and Starbright Farm. Each stop offered a unique perspective on Maryland’s diverse agricultural landscape. I left the day with a newfound appreciation for the work that goes into food production and land stewardship.
On Thursday, I traveled to the UMD Clarksville Dairy Facility, where I assisted Dr. Qianwen Lu and fellow intern Elizabeth Karides with fieldwork for their Biochar project. This was a great opportunity to get involved in applied agricultural research, and contribute to efforts focused on improving soil health and sustainability.
To round out my week, I met with Andrea Franchini to discuss my progress on the MAP project. Specifically, my research into the indigenous communities and Native American tribes of Maryland. It was a rewarding conversation that tied together my academic interests and goals for my internship.
Overall, my third week was enriching and informative. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn about the various aspects of Maryland's agricultural system, and I'm looking forward to what the coming weeks will bring.
