My name is Nina Price, and I am currently a senior at University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I am majoring in Agricultural Communications and plan to graduate in the spring of 2026. Since transferring to UTK in the fall of 2024, I have had the opportunity to join the Block and Bridle club as well as become a member of the 2025 Livestock Judging Team.
Outside of school, I live in Washington County on my family’s grain farm where we grow corn, wheat, sorghum, and soybeans. Additionally, I participated in 4H and FFA competing in various CDE’s and LDE’s as well as showing market animals at the Washington County Ag Expo and Fair.
My internship placement is at the Western Maryland Research and Education Center (WMREC), where I also occasionally assist at the Washington County Extension Office. At WMREC I am working with Forage and Pasture Extension Specialist Amanda Grev, Ruminant Livestock Specialist Brittany Fletcher, and Extension Agent Jeff Semler. This summer, I have the opportunity to assist my mentors with their current sheep and cattle co-grazing perennial and annual forage study. With this study, my role includes assisting in the daily care of the animals, data collection, forage sampling, and pasture management.
In addition, through this internship placement, I will be able to interact with and learn more from producers across the state of Maryland. I will have the opportunity to gain experience through various events such as pasture walks, farm visits, the county fair, and more. These gatherings provide valuable opportunities for producers and others in the agricultural industry to discuss strengths and challenges of current farming practices and most importantly, learn from one another.
Growing up on a farm I quickly discovered my passion for agriculture. As I got older, I continued to learn that even more so, I loved advocating for and educating others about agriculture. I am so excited to learn more about what the University of Maryland Extension (UME) does for our community and state. Having grown up living near both of the facilities where I am working at, I have heard a lot about UME, and am thrilled to be behind the scenes this summer.
This internship is giving me the chance to not only learn more about extension, but also to grow both personally and professionally. In the future, I hope to return to UME with the knowledge and skills I’ve gained and contribute to the continued education of our community!
Hi Nina! I really enjoyed reading your blog and learning a little bit about your background in agriculture and involvement at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It seems like you have a really fun and educational summer ahead of you!
