Started off the busy week with an animal weigh day on Monday. Everything went as usual but there was one calf that we gave some extra attention. It was showing some signs of sickness so we decided to take its temperature and it had a fever. We administered medicine and have kept an eye on it this week. The calf seems to be doing much better now.
The rest of the week was a fun filled and busy fair week! Tuesday morning was the swine show at the Washington County Ag Expo and Fair. I spent the first half of the day in the swine barn calling kids, moving pigs, and getting classes in and out of the show ring. After lunch we went back to the office and did some work on the computers while we cooled off. Around 3:30 we went back over to the fairgrounds to help with the beef cattle show. Once again, my main job was to find exhibitors in the barn and get them lined up and ready at ringside.
Wednesday morning I was back at another show to help. This time it was the dairy steer show and I was actually in the ring. I made sure the ring was clean and assisted exhibitors that had trouble getting their animals to move. I have little experience with dairy cattle so it was interesting to hear the judges opinions and see which animals did well in the show.
Bright and early on Thursday morning Rylee and I got our first experience dealing with Turkeys! The birds were pretty big, ranging 40+ pounds. This meant that many of the kids couldn’t pick up their turkeys to put them on the show table. With Jeff's wisdom of how to properly pick up a bird, we were able to efficiently help them get their animal on the table and hold it for the judge to observe. We did a few other things throughout the day, but the main event was the youth livestock sale in the evening. Around 4 o'clock, Rylee and I got the the sale booth and began filing paperwork from buyers. From then on it was a hectic night keeping things organized and filing documents. The sale finally ended around 11pm but we still had papers to organize and buyers that needed to check out and pay. We finished everything up around 1am and headed home for the night. While it was a long and fast paced day, this was one of my favorite events of the week. I enjoyed all the people I got to see and felt accomplished in the work I was able to get done!

This is a photo from our weigh day on Monday. Here I am recording weights, famacha scores, and body conditions or our data sheet.
This is another photo from our weigh day. Here we are walking the annual group from their pasture to the barn to be worked through the chute.
Here is a picture of me helping with the turkey show on Thursday. I helped get the birds on the table and given to the judge. Holding their wings helped to ensure that the exhibitors, judge, turkey, and others stayed safe. The turkeys were very big (almost 50lbs) and much stronger than I expected!
