This week in my internship, we explored cross-cultural competencies—a topic that really made me reflect on the importance of global and cultural understanding when working with diverse communities. In my experience so far, these skills are essential. Whether I’m helping with a 4-H event or supporting community programs, being respectful, open-minded, and adaptable makes a huge difference.
Cross-cultural competencies go beyond simply knowing about other cultures—they're about listening actively, asking thoughtful questions, and recognizing our own assumptions and biases. These skills help build trust, encourage collaboration, and make sure that everyone feels included and valued, especially in spaces like 4-H that bring together youth from all kinds of backgrounds.
Outside of this week’s learning theme, fair prep has been in full swing! I've spent most of my time getting materials ready and helping plan upcoming events. One highlight was visiting Barton Garden, a beautiful community garden located at a church in George’s Creek. It’s part of a Master Gardener program that gives local kids hands-on learning opportunities in nature. While there, we made plant labels and talked about ways to get more youth involved in upcoming activities. It was a great reminder of how even small projects can make a big impact in a community.
In addition to the garden visit, I’ve been helping design materials for next week’s Robotics competition and Skillathons. I’m really excited to see all the planning come to life at the fair. It’s been so rewarding to be part of something that combines creativity, learning, and community connection.
Stay tuned—next week I’ll be sharing highlights from the fair and everything we’ve been working so hard to make happen!
